Wim Wenders is an academy award nominated film director, writer, and photographer. Wim Wenders was born as Wilhelm Ernst Wenders in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1945 and grew up in Düsseldorf, Koblenz and surrounding areas. After two years of studying medicine and philosophy and a yearlong stay in Paris as a painter he attended the University of Television and Film in Munich from 1967 to 1970.

Making his feature directorial debut with Summer in the City (1970). Much of the distinctive cinematography in his movies is the result of a highly productive long-term collaboration with Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller. Some of his more successful and critically acclaimed movies, Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, for example, have been the result of fruitful collaborations with avant-garde authors Peter Handke and Sam Shepard. Handke's novel, The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick was adapted for Wenders' second feature film, The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty. Handke co-wrote the script for Wings of Desire and Until the End of the World, both featuring Solveig Dommartin. One of the most important figures to emerge from the "New German Cinema" period in the 1970s, he was a founding member of the German film distribution "Filmverlag der Autoren" in 1971 and he established his own production company "Road Movies" in Berlin in 1975. Among the many distinctions for his cinematic work are Academy Award nominations for Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Pina (2011). His documentary The Salt of the Earth (2014) about the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, whose son Juliano Salgado was Co-Director, had it’s world premiere in the special section Un Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. Alongside directing atmospheric auteur films Wenders works with the medium of photography, and his poignant images of desolate landscapes engage themes including memory, time and movement. His photography series, "Pictures from the surface of the Earth" and "Places, strange and quiet", are exhibited in museums and art institutions around the world. Wim Wenders has published numerous books with essays and photographs.

Wim Wenders became a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin in 1984. He was awarded honorary doctorates at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France (1989), the Theological Faculty of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland(1995), the University of Louvain, Belgium (2005) and the Architectural Faculty of the University of Catania, Italy (2010). He is founding member and president of the European Film Academy since 1996 and member of the Order pour le Mérite since 2005. He is an Honorary Professor at the University for Television and Film in Munich, Germany since 1993 and currently teaches film as a professor at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg since 2001.
